The Large Backflow Check Key Tool is designed to quickly remove the #2 cam check used in Ames and Watts double check valves that measure at 6 in.,without destroying the valve, your tools, or your hands.
There are two cam checks (commonly referred to as check valves) located inside of your backflow preventer assembly. Together, they regulate the flow and pressure of the water that moves through plumbing and piping systems.
This product is uniquely designed with extended legs designed to rotate the #2 cam check with a 1/2 in. drive ratchet or breaker bar (not included). This Check Key Tool works with both reduced pressure zone (RPZ) and double check backflow preventers.
How do Backflow Check Key Tools work?
While manufacturers sometimes recommend using a screwdriver to remove or replace cam checks, this technique can be dangerous and may not work every time. In fact, if the check valve is installed correctly, the force needed to remove the assembly may break some tools (or even the cam check itself).
This particular backflow tool slides directly into the grooves of various Ames and Watts backflow preventers (6 in. sizes), providing the necessary leverage to safely remove and replace the #2 cam check.

How do I use the Check Key Tool?
Operation of the Backflow Check Key is simple and consistent across all compatible double check valve backflow preventers.
First, locate the cam check inside of the backflow check valve. Then, line the Check Key tool up with the cam check and rotate the tool until the legs align with and slide into the slots found in the perimeter of the cam check. Slight pressure may be required for the check key to snap into place.
After securing the tool inside the slots, attach a 1/2 in. ratchet or breaker bar, and begin to rotate the Check Key tool. If the cam check won't budge, wedge a small piece of wood in the opening between the tool and the valve. Wedges can provide extra torque by pressing the tool tightly against the check valve while keeping hands out of harm's way.
When installing a new backflow check valve, consumers have found that lubricating the O-ring can help increase the ease of the process tremendously. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and applicable laws when lubricating valves connected to potable water systems. Many Ames- and Watts-brand valves should be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved lubricant.
