Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify the SIN (sprinkler identification number) on a Tyco sprinkler?

The sprinkler identification number (SIN) is an alphanumeric code stamped on the deflector of all sprinklers, including Tyco, made after 2000. A Tyco SIN starts with "TY" (e.g., TY315, TY3251) and uniquely identifies the model, response type, and other key features and performance characteristics. The SIN is the most reliable way to ID replacement sprinklers and confirm compatibility with cover plates and certain kinds of escutcheons. If you have an older sprinkler that does not have a SIN, you must look for relevant logos and other markings on the sprinkler's deflector and frame, and then research the model. QRFS can help with that!

Is knowing the sprinkler identification number (SIN) enough to buy a Tyco head?

The SIN is a valuable first identifier — it conveys the model, K-factor, orientation, response type, etc. However, the SIN alone does not detail the sprinkler's finish and activation temperature, among some other possible characteristics. At a minimum (and usually), you will also need to choose the required activation temperature and preferred finish for a specific SIN to complete a sprinkler order.

What does “K-factor” mean?

The K-factor is a crucial measurement that indicates the sprinkler's water discharge rate at a given pressure. It represents the size of the sprinkler's orifice, with larger K-factors corresponding to higher flow rates and vice versa. If you are replacing a sprinkler, the K-factor is one of the key performance characteristics that must match exactly (or, if that’s not possible, closely within a tight range, according to specific NFPA rules).

How do I ensure that a given escutcheon or cover plate is compatible with my Tyco sprinkler?

All cover plates that hide concealed sprinklers behind walls and ceilings and some types of escutcheons that cover the holes cut to expose sprinklers in finished walls and ceilings must be “listed.” This listing means they are designed and tested to fit specific fire sprinkler models as part of the “listed sprinkler assembly.” To find compatible covers, use a concealed sprinkler’s sprinkler identification number (SIN) along with Tyco’s technical data sheets, the search bar at QRFS.com, or the QRFS QuickFinder. You can use the same process to find escutcheons—except only recessed escutcheons or escutcheons for “flush-style” sprinklers must be listed. Standard escutcheons and adjustable 401 escutcheons don't require a listing, and they can be manufactured by companies other than the sprinkler manufacturer. Read this blog to learn more about which escutcheons require this certification and must precisely match a sprinkler.
