It’s simple and easy. Using the alignment attachment, place one jaw around the threaded base of the sprinkler. Then crimp the other jaw (with the rubber seal) shut by squeezing the handle. A bolt can be tightened or loosened to adjust the seal on the sprinkler, and a quick-release arm allows you to instantly detach the Quickstop.

The short answer is yes—temporarily. Quickstop serves as an interim fire sprinkler because it has a fusible link that melts away at 250F, letting the water flow again onto a fire. Be sure to check with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ; usually, the local fire marshal) to determine if the temperature requirements are appropriate. If you leave Quickstop in place for a long time, however, it will eventually lead to flooding. Replace the damaged head as soon as possible and follow all local fire code requirements for reporting system deficiencies.
If it’s applied correctly, it shouldn’t. Quickstop creates a water-tight seal while handling pressures up to 350 PSI (2400 KPA), and most sprinkler systems operate at a fraction of that number. In fact, 5-year hydrostatic tests of commercial sprinkler systems that check for leaks are done at “200 psi (13.8 bar) pressure for 2 hours, or at 50 psi (3.4 bar) in excess of the maximum pressure, where maximum pressure is in excess of 150 psi.” (NFPA 25)
Maintenance is minimal. After each use, dry the tool and spray it with a light coating of lubricant (WD-40). That’s it!
