A fire sprinkler gauge is used to monitor the pressure of the water or air within a fire sprinkler system. This allows fire protection professionals, building owners, and inspectors to verify that the system has adequate pressure to operate effectively during a fire. Gauges are placed at critical points throughout the system, such as at the risers and near check and control valves.
NFPA 25 requires sprinkler gauges to be replaced every 5 years or tested against a calibrated gauge. If the tested accuracy deviates more than ±3% of the full scale, the gauge must be recalibrated or replaced. Often, system owners just replace gauges every 5 years, as they are inexpensive and it’s more convenient than conducting testing.
When a fire sprinkler gauge is UL Listed or FM Approved, it means that a nationally recognized, third-party laboratory has tested and certified a manufacturer’s gauge to meet specific standards for safety, accuracy, and durability under fire protection system conditions. These certifications are crucial for ensuring that fire protection equipment functions as intended.
Some warning signs include obvious physical damage, leaks around the gauge, a fluttering or unstable pointer, an unclear or unreadable dial, or readings that are obviously incorrect when compared to system acceptance readings and regular readings at working pressure (especially when other gauges may read normal).
