Overview

The White-on-Red Everlux Photoluminescent Exit Sign supplies commercial, industrial, and large residential buildings with an alternative to powered exit signage. This code-compliant, listed sign does not require electricity and can guide occupants to safety during a power outage or natural disaster.

This Everlux sign features photoluminescent white text on a red plate approximately 16 in. x 9-1/2 in. Molded from aluminum and coated in a glow-in-the-dark pigment, this sign provides a minimum of 90 minutes' illumination visible at a distance of 50 feet.

How does this sign work?

This white-and-red exit sign glows after sufficient exposure to light. Note, however, that the reliable light source required by life safety codes typically can't be natural lighting. Every photoluminescent sign needs illumination from an external charging light. Local fire codes may require that the charging light is on 24/7, while the building is occupied, or at other times. Always check with your local AHJ.

In compliance with UL 924, this sign will provide a minimum of 20 millicandelas per square meter (mcd/m2) when charged,¬ùenough light to be seen and understood from 50 feet away.

Each sign can fully charge in 60 minutes when provided with a light source delivering:

  • 54 lux (or 5 footcandles) of light
  • A cool white source color (4000K)

These required levels of light may be provided by fluorescent and LED lights with a cool-white color temperature. These lights are bright and typically reserved for indoor walkways and workspaces. Other types of lighting, even very bright incandescent (traditional) bulbs or neon signs, shouldn't be used as external charging lights.

When can I use a photoluminescent exit sign?

Modern building codes require exit signs in schools, commercial structures, and a variety of other structures where a power outage may impede the safe and swift exit of occupants. NFPA 101: Life Safety Code and the International Building Code permit the use of photoluminescent signs so long as they comply with:

  • Letters at least 6in. tall and 3/4in. wide
  • Chevron-type directional indicators
  • UL 1994-compliant illumination

These signs are often mounted in locations where electricity is inaccessible. Local codes may also require door-mounted markers that supplement traditional exit signs, particularly in high-rise buildings.
