This aluminum fire department connection (FDC) sign features red lettering over a 10-inch x 7-inch white background to help firefighters quickly locate inlets for a building's fire protection system. With pre-drilled holes for mounting on walls, this sign helps building owners comply with International Code Council (ICC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements for FDCs to be easily and quickly located during an emergency.
This sign is an ideal supplement for fire sprinkler and standpipe systems installed in accordance with NFPA 13, NFPA 14, or the International Fire Code (IFC). However, this sign does not have the 6-inch-tall letters needed to comply with section 912.2.2 of the IFC (2015 edition). If your FDC may not be visible to an approaching fire truck, install a larger sign or consult with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before using this sign.
How do I ensure that fire officials can find and use my FDC?
In order for fire department connections (FDC) to be effective, they must be easy to locate. The International Fire Code (IFC), section 912.2.1, recommends that FDC signs be placed on the street side of buildings, fully visible and recognizable from the street or nearest point of fire department vehicle access
To facilitate emergency access, building owners should also:
- Record the location of all FDCs on the property, taking photographs may be helpful.
- Remove all obstructions within 3 inch (91.4 cm) around the connection (including bushes, fences, and other objects).
- Use road markings to indicate that the section around a fire department connection is reserved for emergency vehicles only.
