Overview

Overview

The Type EA-1 PROTECTOSPRAY™ directional spray nozzle is an automatic, medium-velocity nozzle used in fixed water-spray fire protection systems. It includes a heat-sensitive glass bulb that opens when exposed to high temperatures, allowing water to discharge through an external deflector that forms a uniform spray pattern. The nozzle provides dependable cooling and surface protection for exposed equipment and structures, helping to control heat and limit fire spread. Its compact bronze body with a 1/2 in. NPT connection makes it practical for a wide range of installation layouts and environments.

Product Overview

Designed for use in deluge and water-spray systems, the Type EA-1 PROTECTOSPRAY nozzle combines automatic activation with a consistent, medium-velocity spray pattern to deliver reliable fire protection performance. When the surrounding temperature reaches the nozzle’s rated value, the glass bulb bursts, opening the waterway. Water then flows across the nozzle’s deflector, producing a controlled spray cone that evenly covers the target area. This action helps absorb heat, cool exposed surfaces, and protect nearby structures or equipment from damage.

The nozzle is suitable for use on vertical, horizontal, curved, or irregular surfaces where heat exposure is a concern. Common applications include protection of process vessels, tanks, transformers, structural steel, conveyors, and mechanical equipment. It is available in several spray angles, orifice sizes, and temperature ratings, allowing system designers to select the combination that meets hydraulic and coverage requirements for each installation. Various finishes, including corrosion-resistant options, are available to match environmental conditions.

To achieve proper coverage, nozzles should be spaced and aimed to fully overlap their spray patterns across the protected area. For most installations, spacing of approximately 10 to 12 feet is typical, depending on the location and system design. Designers must confirm that the system provides sufficient flow and pressure to maintain effective spray density. In systems using smaller orifices or where water quality may be an issue, strainers are recommended to prevent blockage. Because the Type EA-1 is an automatic nozzle, placement must also allow the thermal element to detect heat effectively.

Listings and Approvals

The Type EA-1 PROTECTOSPRAY nozzle is UL and cUL Listed and FM Approved for use in fixed water-spray fire protection systems. These certifications confirm that the nozzle has been tested for consistent performance under applicable standards. Use of this product must comply with its published listings, local regulations, and recognized design standards such as NFPA 15.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable fire protection standards. Apply thread sealant to the 1/2 in. NPT connection and hand-tighten the nozzle before using the specified wrench to finish tightening to the recommended torque. Excessive torque can distort the inlet and cause leakage. Position the deflector exactly as shown on the design drawings to achieve the intended spray pattern. For coated models, handle carefully to avoid damaging the protective finish, and do not install any nozzle with a cracked bulb or missing liquid. A small air bubble should be visible in the bulb when the nozzle is held horizontally.

During construction, keep the nozzle opening protected from dirt and debris. Before system acceptance testing, remove any protective covers to allow free water flow. Once installed, include the nozzle in the regular inspection and maintenance program as required by NFPA 25 or local codes. Inspect for obstructions, corrosion, physical damage, and correct orientation. Nozzles must never be painted, plated, or modified after leaving the factory, as this can affect performance. Replace any damaged or impaired nozzles immediately.

Reliable system performance depends on proper design, installation, and periodic maintenance. Hydraulic calculations should confirm adequate flow and pressure, and testing should be performed as required to verify that the system operates as intended in a fire event.
