This fire alarm Bell Back Box provides weatherproof & airtight protection against the elements when installing fire alarm bells outdoors and keeps bells compliant as according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 72. Specifically, these standards require:

“Outdoor bells acting as part of a fire sprinkler or standpipe waterflow alarm be protected against weather” (NFPA 13, 16.11.1.2 -2019 edition)

“Devices installed as part of a fire alarm system be protected against damage” (NFPA 72, 18.3.4 - 2017 edition)

These fire alarm bell back boxes can make secure mounting easier with holes made for wall mounting as part of their design. They provide a weatherproof and airtight seal to protect wires from weather, birds, and other factors that may tamper with the components on the back of the bell. This product is 1-1/2 in. deep and is compatible with 6 in., 8 in., and 10 in. fire alarm bells.

If installing in a non-fire application, you may not need a back box, however, surrounding electrical components with the air/watertight seal provided is definitely a good idea, and is highly recommended to ensure the bell is functioning at its best ability.
