Safe Signal Supervisory Switch PIBV2 Tamper Switch for PIV & Butterfly Valves

This Safe Signal PIBV2 Supervisory Switch, also known as a Tamper Switch, identifies tampering in a fire protection system by sending an alarm signal to a nearby alarm or fire alarm control panel when a Post Indicator Valve (PIV) or Butterfly Valve has been closed or tampered with. This tamper switch also features 100% synchronization, meaning it will activate both the alarm panel and local bell simultaneously, if needed. It also can be installed as a tamper switch for many other types of wall post, recessed wall post, and pressure reducing valves.

Featuring a single side conduit entrance, this switch’s design provides a direct pathway to the electrical source, eliminating the need for right-angled fittings. With its adjustable length actuator, the switch has a convenient breakaway feature for installation on shorter valves, eliminating the need for cutting the shaft.

This Supervisory Switch has a temperature range of 32-120F. It has a bi-directional actuator, which allows for installation in rising (upward lever) or falling flag (downward lever) installations and is NEMA 3R & UL Listed for use indoors and outdoors when the actuator is mounted vertically. It has two sets of Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) switches enclosed in a durable terminal block that have a contact rating of 10A 125/250VAC; 2.5A 6/12/24VDC. Accommodates up to 12 AWG wire & equipped with tamper-resistant cover screws to prevent unauthorized entry.

Why does my Post Indicator Valve (PIV) need to be fully open?

PIVs are a type of valve used in fire sprinkler systems to control the flow of water into specific sections or zones of the sprinkler system. These valves are typically large and installed outside of buildings or in easily accessible locations. It is crucial for PIVs to stay open (in the fully open position) for several reasons. PIVs control the water supply to the sprinkler system in specific zones. When a fire is detected, the sprinkler heads in the affected zone need an immediate and continuous flow of water to suppress or control the fire effectively. If the PIV is closed or partially closed, it will restrict water flow, causing activation delay. Keeping PIVs open ensures that the entire fire sprinkler system always remains pressurized and ready for operation. Closed PIVs can lead to a loss of pressure in the affected zone, which may result in sprinkler heads not activating or functioning correctly during a fire emergency. Fire protection codes and standards often require that fire protection systems, including sprinkler systems with PIVs, be maintained in an always ready-to-operate state. Failure to keep PIVs open may lead to code violations and legal repercussions.
